In September 2024, SABIC, a global leader in the chemical industry, announced the launch of its certified low-carbon product portfolio, a pivotal step toward achieving its 2050 carbon neutrality pledge. This initiative enables customers and stakeholders to meet sustainability objectives with products that feature a reduced carbon footprint. The first offering in this portfolio is low-carbon methanol, introduced by SABIC’s Chemicals business.
The innovative low-carbon methanol is produced using the by-product CO2 as a raw material, captured from upstream processes through advanced carbon capture and utilization (CCU) technology. This approach minimizes reliance on traditional feedstocks, significantly reducing emissions while maintaining high-quality product specifications and delivering notable Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) savings.
Manufactured at SABIC’s joint ventures’ methanol production sites, the certified low-carbon methanol is versatile, with applications in maritime fuel, resins for laminate flooring and furniture panels, and acrylic sheets. SABIC plans to expand its global low-carbon product portfolio by leveraging cutting-edge technologies and its extensive asset base.
“The petrochemical industry plays a pivotal role in shaping a sustainable future. With the growing demand for innovative materials and practices, SABIC is committed to collaborating with value chain partners to achieve carbon neutrality,” said Olivier Thorel, EVP Chemicals at SABIC.
SABIC worked with independent third parties to develop the ISCC Carbon Footprint Certification (CFC) module and conducted a pilot audit at its production sites. The CFC framework links sustainability certifications and mass balancing across complex value chains.
Additionally, SABIC is advancing technologies such as electrification, hydrogen combustion, and renewable energy to reduce emissions. This initiative underscores SABIC’s sustainable innovation leadership and dedication to creating a resilient, circular carbon economy.
