November 16, 2024, Ballast Nedam announced the acquisition of Hurks Groep, a family-owned construction and project development company based in Eindhoven. The agreement, aimed at ensuring the continuity of the century-old firm, is pending approval from the Netherlands Authority for Consumers & Markets.
Geert Hurks, owner and general manager of Hurks Groep, highlighted the importance of the company’s legacy in his decision to proceed with the takeover. “With both my sons choosing not to continue the business, I felt this was the right step. By joining Ballast Nedam, I am confident that Hurks’ identity will be preserved, and we can achieve significant goals together,” said Hurks.
Strengthening Regional Position
Ballast Nedam emphasized that the acquisition aligns with its strategic ambition to enhance its presence in construction and project development in the Brainport region. CEO Kemal Sağlam noted that Hurks Groep’s expertise complements Ballast Nedam’s goals, underlining the value of family businesses in the company’s expansion strategy. The acquisition also strengthens Ballast Nedam’s residential construction activities, with Board Member Niels Doodeman stating, “This move enhances our connection with customers and suppliers in a rapidly growing region.”
Legacy and Future
Hurks Groep, founded in 1916, has been led by the fourth and final generation of the Hurks family and employs approximately 160 staff. Following the acquisition, Hurks Group will continue to operate under its existing name, ensuring the preservation of its established brand and identity. Ballast Nedam, a leading Dutch construction and development company founded in 1877, has been part of Rönesans Holding since 2015. The acquisition of Hurks Groep marks another step in its mission to strengthen its capabilities and expand its regional footprint.
